Beetle and electrical certificates are general conditions in most deeds of sale. Since the early 1990’s it has become a legal requirement that when a property is sold, the owner must obtain a certificate to confirm that the electrical installations adhere to government’s safety standards (SANS 10142-1).
The beetle certificate is not a legal requirement but the banks require a beetle certificate as a safety requirement before a bond will be approved for a property and is mostly a condition requirement in the deed of sale.

Borer Beetles was founded in 1985 by Bob Swemmer. Through dedication and hard work he established a reputation of honesty and thoroughness. In 2001 Johan Fourie took over the helm and continues to operate with these values. During Bob Swemmer's time only beetle inspections and corrective work were performed. Johan realised the need for a one-stop service and extended Borer Beetles' value proposition to include electrical inspections as well.
In the late 90's Johan obtained a qualification from the Forestry Department of the University of Stellenbosch which enabled him to perform "wood destroying organism" inspections. Apart from beetle and electrical inspections and the corrective actions associated with these, Borer Beetles also specialises in the treatment of termites and the methyl bromide fumigation of built-in wood, e.g. floors, roof trusses and furniture. The company is also registered in terms of ISPM15 International Regulations to do fumigation of palettes for export purposes.
The owner and staff are registered with the Department of Agriculture as pest control officials, fumigation officials and wood destroying organism inspectors.
Johan Fourie is currently the chairperson of the West and Southern Cape branch of the South African Pest Control Association.
