Kleinood is situated in the Helderberg area near Stellenbosch. This area is renowned for its warm days and cool nights, making it ideal for wine grape production. The plantings are done on North and West facing slopes at altitudes varying from 172 to 198 meters above sea level.
Soils tests indicated a surprising variation in soil types. This is a direct result of the natural weathering of the solid granite rock layers over the centuries. The Northern slopes consist primarily of Tukulu and Kroonstad soils, whilst the Western slopes are Klapmuts, Tukulu and Witfontein soils. On the high lying sections of the farm the land is covered in boulders similar to those found in the Rhone valley.
Four different types of virus-free French Shiraz clones were grafted onto two different rootstocks and were planted with varying spacings and row directions, in blocks not exceeding half a hectare. There is also a small block of Mourvedre and a block of Viognier, to be used for blending purposes.
