Bo-Kaap – About the Neighbourhood

The Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most distinct neighbourhoods known for its vibrant, predominantly Muslim, Cape Malay community and its equally bold flat-roofed colourful houses and cobbled stone roads.

Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city centre, and formerly known as the Malay Quarter, the Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves and political exiles brought here from other Dutch colonies in the east including Indonesia’s Batavia, Sumatra, Java and also East Africa. Most of these groups spoke some Malay, hence this new community becoming known as the Cape Malays. Cheetah outreach and cape winelands.

Outreach is a conservation organization that aims to ensure the long-term survival of the South African cheetahs and its ecosystem, through a multi-disciplined and integrated conservation programmed of research and education. Cheetah Outreach is an educational effort that brings the cheetah to the people, Cats can be touched and seen.

The programmed raises an awareness of these endangered animals and their threatened ecosystems, as well as promoting livestock management techniques incorporating non-lethal predator control.

Cheetah Outreach offers presentations, environmental resources and workshops to schools within the Western Cape Province and collaborates with other research and conservation institutions internationally to help ensure the survival of this African predator. Our first stop trip will be Bo-kaap and our second will be the Cheetah and at the end Stellenbosch Wine Tasting

A popular daytime destination, hillside Bo-Kaap is known for its narrow-cobbled streets lined with colourful houses. Local Cape Malay culture is represented at sites like the 1790s-built Auwal Mosque and the Bo-Kaap Museum.

With exhibits about the achievements of Muslim immigrants. Nearby, simple restaurants serve curries, roti and other Cape Malay dishes. Noon Gun is fired daily from Signal Hill at midday.

Bo-Kaap houses are colourful, and streets are cobbled.

The area is traditionally a multicultural neighbourhood, and 56.9% of its population identify as Muslim.

What are bumper balls?

Bumper balls are mini, inflatable Zorb balls that you can put over your body and roll around in the sand on or bounce into your friends. This laugh a minute activity is lots of fun and a great way to enjoy yourself on the dunes.

What type of bikes do you have?

You will be riding on a Linhai 300cc 4×4 quad bike, which is fully automatic, stable and built to handle the sand dunes. Once you are comfortable on the bike, your expert guides will lead you from the staging area for a ride along our route before heading to our base camp for the Bumper Ball experience.
