THERMGUARD was established by Mark Stannard in 1984 and sold to Eric Quarmby at the end of 2017 who moved the factory from Pietermaritzburg to Kempton Park. Mark built up a network of long serving agents throughout the country with a proven 30+ year’s track record.
THERMGUARD is remarkably good for the environment. Not only does it slow the burning of fossil fuels by saving electricity in your home, it is made from 80% recycled newsprint, which could otherwise go into landfills. THERMGUARD also has an extremely low embodied energy. This prevention of greenhouse gases at both the consumer and producer end of the product lifecycle is known as a “double green” effect.
THERMGUARD has a countrywide network of approved contractors who install our product according to our instructions. Assessment of your ceiling, safe covering of downlighters and appropriate placement of insulation are all key areas where our professionals have a wealth of expertise.
THERMGUARD Cellulose Fibre Insulation is made from recycled newsprint mixed with additives to make it fire retardant and insect and rodent resistant. Thousands of tonnes of newsprint that could otherwise have been sent to landfills are milled into our light cellulose fibre insulation with optimal density, which is blown onto the ceiling in your roof. Cellulose fibre insulation fits effectively into all the hard to reach nooks and crannies, ensuring the best possible coverage for superior results.
Heat moves naturally from areas of high to lower heat within your house, and all the building materials used in your house either absorb heat or help to transfer it. If your home is heated in winter, that hot air will continually try to move to the outside of your house, where the air is cooler. In the summertime, hot air from the outside will constantly try to flow into the cooler space in your house.
THERMGUARD is treated with fire retardant additives and withstands the heat of a blow lamp without melting or emitting toxic fumes. Where our building insulation has been present in fires it has actually afforded protection against spread and reduced damage. Fire tested in terms of SANS 428 and classified B/B1/2.
Cellulose fibre is a very effective soundproofing material. THERMGUARD is four times as dense as glass fibre and therefore has excellent acoustic values. Noise pollution from traffic and airplanes will be significantly reduced in the home once THERMGUARD is installed. The layer of roof insulation will also prevent sound travelling between rooms through the roof space. When installed at 100mm, and thicker, Thermguard will have a Noise Reduction Co-efficient of .80 – .90. This means that .80 – .90 of the sound will be absorbed by the insulation.
The embodied energy in a product is the energy which was consumed during manufacture. THERMGUARD has a very low embodied energy as the major raw material, waste paper, has an effective value of zero because it merely has to be transported to the factory rather than to landfill sites. The milling of the product is a relatively low energy process. By contrast, processing of raw materials for mineral fibre manufacture requires extraction and crushing of finite mineral resources by energy-intensive methods.
